Best Poker Movies I have Ever Seen

Almost habitually, every time a movie features a scene shot at a casino, we are bound to see spectacular wins, much like that we expect to see in the online casino industry.

Though we all know that most of them are close to impossible, they are a great way to keep players glued to the screen, in anticipation of what’s going to happen next.

With the much awaited release of Molly’s Game, a Hollywood blockbuster that’s based on Molly Bloom, I’ve thought it wise to write down some of the best poker movies and scenes that got me really tensed.

Best Poker Scenes in Movies

The Hangover – 2009

Currently sitting in the second place as the top grossing R-rated comedy themed film in the U.S., the original Hangover film is one of those classical prank-filled movies based on real-life bachelor parties that happen in Sin City.

The movie primiered in 2009 and managed to receive numerous nominations, which it won almost half of them including the prestigious and coveted Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in 2010. The movie was such a great hit that the producer decided to release two sequels The Hangover Part II and The Hangover Part III.

This not the reason though we are featuring it here, no! We are only interested in the scene where they are trying to get money to buy back their friend. This scene starts with one of the characters, Allan, pulling out the ‘Guide to Blackjack’ book before it cuts the group’s confidence of entering the casino.

They finally secured themselves a spot at one of the blackjack tables, and soon their winnings start to grow. However, on realizing that they are getting some unwanted attention from the casino’s security team, they quickly make a swift exit.

Casino Royale – The Texas Hold’em Scene

If someone would ask me the most tense scenes in the best poker movies I’ve ever watched, I’d quickly mention this one, without thinking twice where Daniel Craig, plays his first role as James Bond in Casino Royale.

Traditionally, James Bond has always been portrayed as a baccarat player, but in this movie, he breaks tradition and decided to play Texas Hold’em, which resonates well with most of the modern viewers.

Le Chiffre, who is the villain in this movie, sets up an exclusive, private high stakes Texas Hold’em game between him and James Bond, hoping that he’d be lucky enough to recover some of the money he’s lost from him earlier on in the movie.

M16 willingly enters bond into the competition at the Casino Royale in Montenegro, with the main objective of beating Le Chiffre, bankrupt him and use his skills to convince him to join the M16.

On his way to Montenegro, a British treasury agent, Vesper Lynd, meets him and gives him the $10 million buy in required for the game.

Unfortunately, Bond loses this stake, and Vesper refuses to advance him the $5 million needed for a re-buy. Fortunate for him, agent Felix Leiter comes to his rescue and offers him the $5 million in exchange for custody of Le Chiffre.

Bond gets back into the game and gradually recovers his stack back. In the process, he’s poisoned by Le Chiffre’s girlfriend, but he miraculously survives this to eventually beat Le Chiffre and walk away with more than $100 million.

Ocean’s 13 – The Magnetron Scene

The Ocean’s trilogy is perhaps one of the best poker movies of the 21st century. The movies tell the story of Danny Ocean, who gathers an 11 man team that includes Rusty Ryan, Linus Caldwell and Fran Catton, who together, they pull off different casino heists.

Ocean's 13 poker sceneHowever, out of these movies, it’s Ocean’s 13’s magnetron scene that stood out for us. Even though it’s something that only stretches into the realms of fantasy, the scene where George Clooney and Brad Pit use magnetron devices concealed as cigarette lighters as one of the most thrilling and exciting scenes.

Unlike the predecessors – Ocean’s 11 and Ocean’s 12 – the team in Ocean’s 13 want to make a $500 million heist at the casino’s table games and machines using their specially designed magnetron devices, which will jam all the security systems in the casino for a period of three minutes, thus giving them the full control of all the machines.

The chaos and drama that ensues over these three minutes are astounding to behold – and if you haven’t watched the movie, it’s about time you did!
